Description:
Passionate about espresso coffee, awesome cafes, and baristas who bring something special to their trade.
Basically, I have been forced to make comment because of the lack of quality reviews about Auckland cafes... seriously people it is disturbing... it seems that there are only the cafe owners themselves writing anything!
Reviews by Moody Barista:
This cafe is probably my favourite in Auckland (and that is saying something). What makes it great:
* Unique and awesome industrial ambiance (including flicking 90s Machintosh puters)
* Interesting building secluded spots to explore upstairs and down
* Crazy modified coffee machine (all the working parts are open to be seen)
* ATTITUDE: we don't sell soy, or trim. We don't have EFTPOS
* VERY strong coffee
* hot tattooed baristas working quickly and well
* loud dance music
* great views of one of busiest intersections on K-road
It is definitely not for everyone and families would probably prefer the quieter environment of starbucks just across the road. This cafe has to be experienced do not miss it.
Great coffee and great cafe. This is a hang out for the cool kids who live around ponsonby. It has great ambiance and always some good looking people to check out. The coffee is good and roasted freshly in Auckland.
This is a very impressive set up. Two four group La Marzocca machines with 4 full time baristas. They service all the coffee requirements for Auckland City Hospital. Anyone who is anyone at the hospital knows that this is the best coffee in there (and there are heaps of options). The quality of coffee and service is very high with each barista having a minimum of 2 years experience in order to work here... no wonder they sell over 100kg of coffee here per week!!
My only complaints are:
* it is takeaway only
* lack of ambiance as it is in a hospital foyer
* soo busy it is impossible to relax
Royal Oak is the place to drink Icoco Coffee as they roast it out the back. The Coffee is great, however, the ambiance to pretty dry and don't expect to get anything decent to eat.
A warm and friendly cafe. Reminds me alot of my student days, sitting around in couchs and drinking coffee. The coffee is good and the atmosphere awesome. There is some great art on the walls and I like their poached eggs on toast. Always some interesting artie types to perv on.
Just a shocker really. Looks great.. seems good... but who is willing to wait 20min for a flat white ... not me. It is a smart looking establishment but the staff don't really want to be there and consequently service is pretty slow.
Hard to fault the service of this place. The original owner is a smart guy who also setup Craven A and another place (I can't remember the name) in Parnell. The atmosphere is the only thing that really lacks here. It is so packed and you are pushed upstairs in a unattractive courtyard... I don't often go here although I know the coffee is good.
These guys seem to be popping up everywhere. I have had coffee from The Coffee Guy in 3 places in Auckland and each time a different operator. The coffee is great, the service has been awesome and the brand looks cool. I often need drive through coffee but don't want to go to McDonalds or BP and these guys offer a much better option. Support the little guy I say!!
Pretty good spot on beresford street.... I've had a couple great coffees here. The barista impressed me with an image of a lion in my crema which I have subsequently stolen and used myself. Another local roaster which is good to support.
Best coffee in the area with good service and heaps of hot students to perv at. Really nice food as well.
Great spot for a cafe along the waterfront of Kohimarama. This cafe was always a bit of a local secret, a haven from the madness of Mission Bay (or so I thought). It was quite small and had a family/personal feel. It has recently (first time back there in 12 months today) been sold, expanded, and renovated. It would seem it was bought by the Sierra Cafe group but retains the name. In some ways it has improved and other ways it has lost a bit of its mystique. It now provides a fabulous menu (consequently I spent $70 on lunch) and the service is great, however (and I hate to say it) the coffee was only average.
I will go back for the awesome views and the food but probably not for the coffee.
