new zealand coffee review (archive)

This site is no longer active; many of the cafes closed after the 2011 earthquake, and it was formally archived in 2019. Thanks for visiting!

Review of Stanley Road by espress_yourself on Mon, 25 Sep 2006:

Well not the most commonly used cafe in Wellington, Stanley Road offers a reasonablely relaxed cafe experience away from the steady traffic of the main pedestrian lines.

A large cafe, it offers a wide range of counter food as well as a considerable menu, the prices sitting ever so slightly higher than normal, but still reasonable. My pasta plate was a long time coming, waiting for around 20 minutes with very few in the cafe, however this left enough time for another flat white!

The coffe is up to an acceptable standard, nothing exceptional with regards to presentation but still a solid pick me up without any after taste or bitterness that was not desired.

The cafe is well set out, with plenty of room to accomodate other patrons without any form of crush at all, using a very minimalist decoration. Some interesting pieces remain on the walls, adding well to the enviroment.

The biggest concern would be with the staff service, which was not very welcoming, the lady behind the counter obviously not having a very good day.

Overall, a cafe with some genuine qualities that encourage a visit (while the cafe is rated as ok it would rest halfway between ok and really good, not enough options!!) and I would say that I was going to go there again, except that I already have, and will do so again.
