new zealand coffee review (archive)

This site is no longer active; many of the cafes closed after the 2011 earthquake, and it was formally archived in 2019. Thanks for visiting!

Description:

Having been a tea drinker most of my life, I have never had instant coffee. I was introduced to espressos about 6 years ago starting on cappuccinos with sugar but soon switching to mochas. I briefly flirted with lattes until changing to flat whites about 3 years ago. Once hooked, I became a regular at one of the better cafes in Christchurch and developed a palate for good coffee. Once the cafe's coffee went downhill, we ventured out to find the best coffee houses in Christchurch My favorites are C4, Hots Shots, Vics, Underground and Lucianos.

I went out of my way to visit here when staying at Pukekohe recently. Great coffee and the breakfasts are good too. Would definitely recommend it.

Have been here for coffee 3 times and none of them measured up. On my first visit, I asked the barista what beans she was using and she had to go and find a bag to check. However, some of my workmates have had good experiences there - could be the luck of he draw.

Review of Underground by flatty on Thu, 04 Sep 2008:

Always get good coffee here. They have a smart card system and you can use it at any of their 3 branches. They also have newsletters and txt specials. Try their branch at Sydenham Central(?). Coffee is excellent and the food is also very good.

Review of Vic's Cafe by flatty on Thu, 04 Sep 2008:

Consistently good coffee using C4 beans. Experienced, friendly baristas and fresh baked food add to the experience.

Review of The Strictly Coffee Co (Bath St) by flatty on Thu, 04 Sep 2008:

One of the top places in Dunedin for coffee. Not such an emphasis on food though.
